If you are planning transportation to the Austin Convention Center, the first thing to know is that it is not there. The building was demolished through 2025 and its $1.6 billion replacement does not open until spring 2029. Everything that used to happen in it now happens somewhere else — and that changes how a program moves.

Where Austin's conferences meet now
The load has been redistributed rather than replaced. The Palmer Events Center on Barton Springs Road carries the largest single share as the sister facility that stayed open. Beyond that, programs run across hotel ballrooms downtown, university and private venues, and purpose-built temporary spaces — SXSW's 2027 Creative Village being the most visible example.
For an attendee this means more addresses per day. For an organiser it means the transportation plan is no longer an add-on to the venue booking; it is part of how the agenda is physically possible.
What that does to a shuttle program
A single-hall citywide needs a loop between hotels and one door. A distributed one needs a network: several destinations, parallel sessions, and delegates who are trying to be in two buildings within fifteen minutes of each other.
The practical answers are higher frequency on the busiest link, a separate dedicated service for speakers and VIPs who cannot be pooled, and honest guidance to the organiser about which agenda items are physically incompatible. We would rather tell you that in planning than have a room start twenty minutes late.
Planning for 2029 and before
The new building is scheduled to open in spring 2029, timed to host SXSW. Until then, any Austin program should be scoped on the assumption of multiple venues, a river crossing for anything at Palmer, and a March or October calendar where the whole city's premium fleet is committed months ahead.
If you are planning a program for 2027 or 2028, that is the constraint to design around. It is entirely workable — Austin has been doing it since 2025 — but not if the plan assumes a building that is currently a construction site.
