Two weekends, not one
ACL runs the same bill across two consecutive weekends — October 2–4 and October 9–11 in 2026 — and the two behave differently. Weekend one draws the out-of-town crowd and fills the hotels; weekend two is heavier on locals and lighter on airport traffic but no easier around the park itself.
If you are choosing, weekend two is generally the calmer arrival experience. If you are already committed, the difference mostly shows up in how early the downtown hotels sell out and how bad the Friday afternoon airport run is.
Where a vehicle can actually reach Zilker
Zilker has no public parking during the festival and the streets immediately around it are closed or controlled. The festival publishes designated drop-off and pick-up zones instead, each within about half a mile of an entrance: south of the river along Barton Springs Road and Riverside Drive across Lamar, and north of the river on Stephen F. Austin Drive near the Crenshaw Bridge.
Which one is right depends entirely on where you are staying and which entrance your wristband tier uses. A downtown hotel usually pairs with the north-side zone; a South Congress or Zilker-adjacent stay pairs with Barton Springs Road. We agree the specific corner before you leave, because arguing about it on Lamar at 5pm is not a plan.
The end-of-night problem
Headliners finish and the park empties in a single wave. Rideshare pricing spikes, matching times stretch, and the pickup zone becomes a crowd of people all describing the same landmark to a driver who cannot get to it.
A pre-arranged chauffeur solves this only if the pickup point is chosen with the exit flow in mind rather than the entrance. We stage away from the surge, fix the meeting point in advance — a named corner, not a park gate — and hold the vehicle, so the walk is short and the wait is zero. It is the single largest difference between a good festival night and a bad one.
Hotels, weekends and the airport
Downtown hotels are the natural base: close to the north-side drop zone, walkable to the Rainey and Second Street dinner options, and a straightforward twenty-five minute run from Austin-Bergstrom outside peak. South Congress trades that proximity for being on the correct side of the river for the Barton Springs entrance.
Arrival day is the Friday of each weekend, and the airport run that normally takes twenty-five minutes runs forty to fifty. Departures on the Monday are lighter than the Sunday-night rush that many visitors expect to beat.
